Dr. Don Vinh, the only Canadian primary author, joins over 100 experts from 35 countries in this landmark effort

A new global guideline for the diagnosis and management of candidiasis, a serious fungal infection, has been published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases. This landmark guideline is the first international set of recommendations addressing this group of fungal diseases, providing critical updates on emerging threats and best practices in patient care.

Dr. Don Vinh, scientist at The Institute, joined over 100 experts from 35 countries to build the new global guideline on candidiasis.

Among the more than 100 experts from 35 countries who contributed, Don Vinh, MD, Scientist in the Infectious Diseases and Immunity in Global Health Program at The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (The Institute), is the only Canadian primary author. Dr. Vinh, who is also an infectious disease physician and medical microbiologist at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) led the section on managing candidiasis in patients with hematologic conditions.

Key updates in the guideline include:

  • The emergence of Candida auris, a highly drug-resistant fungal species.
  • Rising antifungal resistance and its impact on treatment.
  • Enhanced recommendations to improve patient care worldwide, strengthen infection control in hospitals, and advance public health.

“By updating our understanding of these infections and how to fight them, this guideline helps ensure that doctors have the best tools to protect vulnerable people from life-threatening illnesses,” said Dr. Vinh.

These recommendations come at a crucial time, as global cases of antifungal-resistant infections continue to rise, threatening the most vulnerable patients. The new guideline provides healthcare professionals with essential strategies to improve outcomes and infection control worldwide.
