Lena Palaniyappan, MD, PhD, Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, and his team from the Douglas Mental Health University Institute recently published practice guidelines for healthcare practitioners in the Canadian Medical Association Journal responding to students who are dealing with mental health issues. 

The key points are: 

  1. Between 2019 and 2023, the incidence of mental health concerns doubled among youth in Canada 
  2. Most crises are reactions to life circumstances, which require proportionate responses
  3. Clinicians should prioritize preventing further crises 
  4. Consideration of behavioural factors and shared care planning can increase engagement 
  5. Cultural humility of clinicians can optimize outcomes Clinicians are not usually immersed in youth culture.
