I am pleased to formally announce that Dr. Peter Gillett is now Interim Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the McGill Faculty of Medicine, as well as Interim Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the MUHC. Dr. Gillett replaces Dr. Seang Lin Tan, who served in these roles with great accomplishment since 1995.
A McGill alumnus, Dr. Gillett is an esteemed member of our community. After completing his undergraduate education at the University of Rochester, he came to McGill to study medicine and conduct his internship at the Montreal General Hospital of the MUHC. Dr. Gillett spent a handful of years abroad in residency at Queen Charlotte’s Maternity Hospital and the Chelsea Hospital for Women, both in London, with the support of awards granted by the Province of Quebec and the Canadian Regional Council of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
Joining McGill as a lecturer in 1970, Dr. Gillett soon became Associate Professor and has served in the Faculty’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology ever since. He has held a number of key administrative positions over his career, including Obstetrician and Gynecologist-in-Chief at the Montreal General Hospital and Director of both the Residency and the Undergraduate Teaching programs. Dr. Gillett has been Chairman of the Council of Physicians, Dentists and Pharmacists of the same hospital, as well as Chairman of the Central Committee of the Council of the MUHC. In 1982, he was appointed Senior Obstetrician and Gynecologist at the Royal Victoria Hospital of the MUHC.
Since 2002, he has been Deputy Chairman of the Department and Director of the Division of Obstetrics at the MUHC.
As Interim Chair, Dr. Gillett assumes responsibility for the academic activities within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at McGill, including teaching hospitals and on-campus research activities.
