The tide is turning: family medicine is just as popular as specialties with young doctors who are starting residencies in 2012. While 31 of the 481 positions offered in specialties went begging, only 25 of the 409 family medicine positions remain vacant at the end of the resident matching. In both cases, about 6% of the spots remain unfilled.
The ranks of family medicine will be enriched with renewed interest among future doctors, much to the relief of patients. For example, all 84 positions offered in family medicine at McGill found takers in the first round this year.
