
We are pleased to announce that Thomas Engelhardt, MD, will serve as Acting Chair of the Department of Anesthesia, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) for an indeterminate time while Thomas Schricker, MD, is on leave.
Dr. Engelhardt is Professor in the Department of Anesthesia at McGill, Anesthetist-in-Chief, Division of Pediatric Anesthesia at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre, and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital of Montreal Foundation Chair in Pediatric Anesthesia.
Dr. Engelhardt received his medical degree from Schiller University in Jena, Germany. He accomplished his postgraduate training in anesthesia in Scotland and obtained his PhD from theUniversity of Aberdeen. In addition, he completed a clinical/research fellowship in pediatric anesthesia at the University of Toronto and The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids).
For nearly 15 years, Dr. Engelhardt worked as Consultant Anaesthetist at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and Grampian University Hospital Trust and was Senior Lecturer, then Honorary Professor in Anaesthesia at the University of Aberdeen, during which time he became an internationally recognized leader in pediatric anesthesia. In 2019, he came to Montreal to assume his new responsibilities at the MCH and FMHS at McGill.
Dr. Engelhardt is the author of more than 120 peer-reviewed publications and has presented more than 100 invited lectures and workshops in the UK, Europe, North America and elsewhere. He has also authored two pediatric anesthesia textbooks.
Dr. Engelhardt is a founding member of SAFETOTS, an initiative that promotes safety and quality in pediatric anesthesia. He is emeritus chair of the Scientific Committee of the Association of Paediatric Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland, and is currently Associate Editor, British Journal of Anaesthesia, Section Editor, Pediatric Anesthesia, and Editor, Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica.
