eLife Poster-McGill Event EngDear Colleagues,

Please join us November 8 for a discussion on eLife – the new open-access journal backed by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society, and the Wellcome Trust. The eLife journal is led by practising scientists, including Dr. Nahum Sonenberg and myself, who are pleased to serve on the board of reviewing editors. Our Editor-in-Chief is Randy Schekman, recipient of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Our featured presenter will be Professor Martin Nowak of Harvard University, whose paper – “Evolutionary dynamics of cancer in response to targeted combination therapy” – was published in eLife this summer. This study models the evolution of drug resistance in tumours and reveals that drugs are more effective when given in combination than sequentially, and that cure is much more likely when the drugs target different pathways. The link below will take you to Professor Nowak’s homepage at Harvard:

Along with this recent work, Dr. Nowak will describe his experience with eLife’s unique approach to peer review, which involves an open consultation among referees, clear and concise guidance for authors, and quick decisions.

He will be joined by Jennifer McLennan, eLife Head of Marketing & Communications, who will describe how eLife works in concert with its board of 200 scientists to improve the way important scientific results are selected for publication, presented on the journal web site, and shared.

The eLife initiative is already influencing key processes at other journals and beginning to fulfil its ambitions for effecting positive change in scientific publishing. Please join us for this valuable discussion and networking event.
