Beginning October 10, a new interactive exhibit will be presented at the Redpath Museum with the goal of sharing the journeys of women and visible minorities from within the McGill scientific community, including highlighting some of the challenges they have faced.
This permanent exhibition is the first initiative of Diversity in STEMM @ McGill, a group founded by Charles Cong Xu, a PhD student in biology from McGill University, and is meant to promote diversity in all its forms in science, technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine (STEMM).
For Cong Xu, the Redpath Museum, which annually welcomes more than 80,000 visitors, was a logical place to promote diversity in science.
“Many of our visitors are young girls and children from immigrant families. They come here and see dinosaurs, animals, a lot of science, but there’s nothing to make them realize that those things they’re passionate about are not only for scientists who resemble those found in the photographs that decorate museum’s walls, “explains Cong Xu.
