We are pleased to announce the appointment of Salman Qureshi, MD, as Chair of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), McGill University, effective October 1, 2024.

Dr. Qureshi is a two-time graduate of the University of Alberta, where he obtained both a BSc and his medical degree. He completed post-graduate research training at McGill (at the Centre for the Study of Host Resistance) and at the Yale University School of Medicine, and post-graduate clinical training at the University of Alberta, the Mayo Clinic, the University of Manitoba and Yale. He holds a fellow/specialist certificate in Internal Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well as certificates of special competence in Infectious Diseases, Respiratory Medicine and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Qureshi is currently Associate Professor, Department of Medicine at McGill. Since 2009, he has been Research Director of the Meakins-Christie Laboratories at McGill, and he is also a full member of the McGill Research Centre on Complex Traits.

At the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), he has developed extensive experience in the management of a wide range of critically ill patients. He is an attending physician in the intensive care units at the Royal Victoria Hospital and the Montreal Chest Institute, a member of the Department of Medicine, Division of Respirology, and Critical Care Program, and Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy across the adult sites of the MUHC.

During his time at McGill, Dr. Qureshi has supervised more than two dozen research trainees including students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as post-doctoral and medical subspecialty fellows. He has served as Block Leader for the respiration section of the Fundamentals of Medicine and Dentistry component of the MDCM curriculum since 2013. He was selected by the McGill MDCM Class of 2018 for the Osler Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Dr. Qureshi conducts novel research in the field of innate immunity and host resistance. He recently held an MUHC Foundation Innovation Grant to study neutrophil regulation of adaptive immunity against fungal pneumonia. As co-investigator, he is currently funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for “BALANCE+: A Platform Trial for Gram Negative Bloodstream Infections.”

Dr. Qureshi is a member of the American Society of Microbiology, the Quebec Society of Intensivists, is a fellow of the American Thoracic Society and is a founding member of the Critical Care-Infectious Diseases Network (Canada). He has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and published or presented nearly 80 abstracts.

As Chair of the Department of Critical Care Medicine in the FMHS, Dr. Qureshi will lead the Department in its research and education missions, as well as lead the Department’s strategic planning and oversee budget allocations. Dr. Qureshi will provide mentoring to faculty members at various stages of their careers, and he will make recommendations to the VP-Dean on recruitment, academic appointments, promotions and tenure in the Department.
