Making headlines: A year after taking the bold move of distancing itself from most elite medical schools by eliminating the requirement of the Medical College Admission Test, McGill University’s medical school says its decision has been staggeringly successful.

In terms of its goal of “widening the net” to attract more students, the number of applicants this year has soared to 2,538 from 1,689 last year. That’s an increase of about 170 per cent, all the more impressive when you take into account that the average R score of applicants remained an impressive 3.7.
