According to Andrea Tone, an associate in the Division of Transcultural Psychiatry in McGill’s Department of Psychiatry and author of the Age of Anxiety: A History of America’s Turbulent Affair with Tranquilizers, the present market for anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medication is better explained through the accidental discovery of Miltown than by the popularized notion that pharmaceutical companies created the market for themselves.
