As part of our Spring Convocation 2025 coverage, we asked graduates from our six Schools to share their experiences of completing a degree in McGill’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Here, we meet Class of 2025 member Yasmine Elmi from the Department of Family Medicine. Yasmine completed her MSc in Family Medicine and received her degree at the Spring Convocation Ceremony on May 27. Congratulations Yasmine!

What did you love most about studying in McGill’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences?
The placement right in the heart of Tiohtià:ke (Montreal) —it’s such a vibrant city to study and grow in.
Please share a particularly proud or challenging moment from your degree?
Finishing my thesis was one of the most challenging experiences. It was my first time leading a manuscript, and I often felt overwhelmed and unsure where to start. The endless rounds of revisions—mostly self-imposed—made the process feel like a tunnel with no end, but I came out of it more confident and capable.
Fave Montreal spots to hang our and/or study?
I love exercising at Enso, running along the Lachine Canal, and studying at cafés all over Montreal. All the cafes and libraries have their own vibe and kept me motivated throughout my degree.
Any shoutouts?
Huge thank you to Dr. Anne Cockcroft, my thesis supervisor, for her guidance; Dr. Mabel Carabali, whose leadership continues to inspire me; and Prof. Ananya Banarjee for her unwavering support.
Top tip for incoming students in your program?
Build your support network early by talking to literally everyone and lean into the discomfort of learning—it’s where growth happens.
What’s next for you?
I’ve joined the MDCM-PhD program at McGill. After completing my first year in medicine, I’ll be starting my PhD in Epidemiology at the School of Population and Global Health this fall.
