On August 16, 2011, the Faculties of Medicine and Dentistry welcomed 185 medicine students and 35 dentistry students for registration and a meet and greet at the McIntyre Medical Sciences Building, kicking off three days of orientation activities and fun. The excitement was palpable as students flowed into the Robert Palmer Howard Amphitheatre for an official welcome from Interim Dean of Medicine, Dr. Samuel Benaroya, Dean of Dentistry, Dr. Paul Allison, and Dr. Robert Primavesi, Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education, among others.
“I have wanted to be a doctor since I first started to have experience in the medical field,” said Deidra Osher, one of 92 women joining the program this year. Proud and excited to be included in the Class of 2015, she expects her first year to be very busy but also enjoyable. “I hope to meet a lot of great people who are just as motivated and excited to be here as I am.”
For many, beginning studies at McGill is the realization of a long-held dream. Samer Jammoul, from Cegep Montmorency, has wanted to study medicine at McGill since the fifth grade, when he did a play on the life of renowned Canadian physician Dr. Lucille Teasdale-Corti. “I really saw myself in it [the play]. I like helping people and it just clicked.” He admits that on the first day of Orientation he is feeling a mix of nervousness and excitement. “It’s a pretty weird feeling, but it’s great.”
“I have been dreaming for so long about becoming a physician,” said Maude Perras. “I am so happy to be here and my parents are very proud.” Although she is not certain about what she would like to do after she completes her studies, she says that she is interested in radiology and family medicine. “I’m giving myself time to think about what I want to do, based on the rotations.”
Orientation activities over the three-day event included talks from Dr. Richard Cruess and Dr. Sylvia Cruess and presentations by McGill leaders about student affairs, student services and student health. Medical Students Society (MSS) and Dental Students Society (DSS) representatives are also on hand every day to host activities.
