Just over 100 years ago, in May 1914, the Empress of Ireland, a Canadian Pacific ship liner, sank in the St. Lawrence River, off the coast of Rimouski, killing 1,012 people aboard, in an accident rivalling that of the better known Titanic. A recent story in the Montreal Gazette, profiles James Grant, the ship’s doctor, who had graduated from McGill medical school in 1913 and is widely considered the hero of the saga.
