It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Richard G. Lalonde on October 2, 2024, in Montreal, after a battle with stomach cancer. Dr. Lalonde was a founding figure of the Chronic Viral Illness Service (CVIS) and a former Director of the Division of Infectious Diseases in the McGill Department of Medicine and at the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC).
For over three decades, Dr. Lalonde, alongside his colleague Dr. Norbert “Nobbie” Gilmore (who passed away earlier this year in June), devoted his career to providing compassionate, multidisciplinary care to those living with HIV and chronic viral infections. Together, they built a legacy of patient-centered care and research that continues to shape the lives of many.
Among his many professional achievements, Dr. Lalonde was a respected physician, teacher, researcher and mentor to many within the medical community. His contributions extended globally, including a cherished year spent as a professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia.
His efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS will forever be remembered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Lalonde’s family, friends and colleagues.
