With broken hearts we announce the death of Dr. John Richardson of Montreal, Quebec. He died peacefully at home surrounded by love from his spouse, Edith Zorychta, his five children Eric, Karen, Celia, Eva and Alan, plus his nine grandchildren Galen, Olivia, Connor, Alexander, Georgia, Sophia, Liam, Sacha, Noah and cat, Milo.
A native of Winnipeg, John received his BSc, MD and PhD from McGill, plus specialized training at the University of Toronto and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. He then forged a distinguished career that spanned almost 50 years in the McGill Faculty of Medicine, as a neuropathologist, research scientist, teacher, administrator, and mentor to his colleagues.
John was vibrantly engaged with life. He had a profound love for his family, and cared deeply about his friends. Among his many interests he derived great enjoyment from nature, music, cooking, art, bicycling, literature, history and science, and he had a lifelong passion for learning. His intellect, sense of humor, and quiet way of giving to others will be irreplaceable in our lives.
In celebration of his life, a memorial service will be held at the McGill University Birks Chapel, 3520 University Street, Montreal, Quebec at 2 pm on Monday, October 31, followed by a reception at the McGill University Faculty Club on 3450 McTavish St. In lieu of flowers, it would make John smile to know that a contribution had been made toward a scholarship for students at the McGill Schulich School of Music.
