KEVIN H. SOUZA, M.S.

Kevin H. Souza, M.S., serves as Assistant Dean for Medical Education and Director of Educational Technology at the University of California, San Francisco’s School of Medicine. In his leadership role, he directs the undergraduate administration and the Office of Educational Technology. He is most noted for his development of the nationally recognized curriculum management system, Ilios, which received the Larry L. Sautter Silver Award for Innovation in Information Technology and is now in use at six medical schools. He is also recognized for his work examining the services and organizational structures of educational technology units within North American medical schools, as published in Academic Medicine in 2006 and 2008. Mr. Souza has also worked with HEALCentral and MedEdPortal to establish peer-review criteria for educational scholarship. He is currently working to build leadership capacity in education at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Tanzania, a project funded by The Gates Foundation, and he serves as chair-elect to the AAMC Western Group on Educational Affairs (WGEA). Mr. Souza earned his masters in biology from Vanderbilt University. Before joining the University of California, School of Medicine, he spent two years as a lecturer in biology at the University of Malawi in southern Africa, where he served on the curriculum committee for the university’s new College of Medicine.



MARC M. TRIOLA, M.D.

Marc Triola, M.D., is an Assistant Professor of Medicine; Chief of the Section of Medical Informatics within the Division of General Internal Medicine; and Director of the Division of Educational Informatics (DEI), which is an advanced educational technology laboratory at NYU School of Medicine. Dr. Triola and DEI have been funded by the National Library of Medicine IAIMS program, the National Science Foundation Advanced Learning Technologies Program, the Centers for Disease Control, U.S. Department of Education, and the Macy Foundation. Dr. Triola’s research experience and expertise includes computer-based medical education, the use of virtual patients, and the assessment of change in knowledge and attitudes resulting from computer-assisted instruction. He serves on the national advisory board for creating standards for virtual patients, is a Project Chair of an AAMC subcommittee on distance learning in education, and chairs an Educational Informatics committee for 16 Medical Schools. His first textbook, “Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences”, was recently published by Addison Wesley.
