Dr. Nahum Sonenberg, a James McGill Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and a member of the Goodman Cancer Research Centre, was elected as an international member of the National Academy of Medicine. New members are elected by current active members through a selective process that recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health.
In 2002, Dr. Sonenberg was awarded the Robert L. Noble Prize from the National Cancer Institute of Canada. He has been a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada since 1992, received the Killam Prize for Health Sciences in 2005 and was the recipient of the Gairdner Foundation International Award in 2008. Appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2010, Dr. Sonenberg received the McLaughlin Medal from the Royal Society of Canada in 2013. In 2014 he was awarded the Wolf Prize in medicine and, earlier in 2015, he was elected foreign associate of the National Academy of Sciences.
Election to the Academy is considered one of the highest honours in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.
