It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Dr. Ana Maria Sant’Anna to the position of Assistant Dean, Admissions Office, Faculty of Medicine, McGill University. Dr. Sant’Anna replaces Dr. Saleem Razack, who has completed his mandate after serving as Assistant Dean since 2009 with commitment and distinction, positioning us as a benchmark in Canada. We take this opportunity to express our deep appreciation to Dr. Razack for his excellent work.

With the appointment of Dr. Sant’Anna, we are also pleased to announce that the Office will focus initially on the Admissions mandate for undergraduate medical education (UGME), with a view to broadening it to include other Faculty programs. Additionally, a new Office of Social Accountability will be established to address the Faculty’s responsibilities and accreditation requirements with respect to equity, diversity and all other related topics extending beyond admissions, which Dr. Razack has graciously accepted to lead on an interim basis.

In the role of Assistant Dean, Admissions, Dr. Ana Maria Sant’Anna will have overall academic responsibility for the recruitment and selection of candidates to the Faculty’s UGME program and, in time, other programs, as appropriate. She will ensure admissions processes are aligned with the guiding principles of excellence, inclusion, curricular alignment, transparency and fairness, while meeting standards set by law, governmental decrees, accreditation bodies and Faculty goals. She will oversee all areas of the selection process and help strengthen, promote and improve the current well-established admissions structure. Among other responsibilities, she will also represent the University and Faculty at relevant provincial, national or international forums related to her mandate.

Dr. Sant’Anna is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at McGill and a practising pediatrician in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at the Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre. In addition to her teaching and supervision, she also serves as an Osler Fellow. Prior to joining McGill, Dr. Sant’Anna taught in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, where she was also Program Director of the Postgraduate GI Pediatric Fellowship Program. Originally from Brazil, she completed her post-MD training at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Université de Montréal.  In addition to the numerous students, residents and fellows she has supervised, Dr. Sant’Anna has received numerous fellowships and awards for her own research, and lectures often in North and South America. She is an active member on a number of committees at the national and international levels, and publishes regularly in peer-reviewed journals.

Please join us in wishing Dr. Sant’Anna a warm welcome into the role of Assistant Dean, Admissions, together with great success.
