Dear McGill students, faculty and staff,

Over the past year, at a time when it has been the most needed, members of the McGill community have been unstintingly generous in their work with the media and the public. Whether it has been to share knowledge about COVID-19, Black Lives Matter, the US elections, or best-practices in distance education, to name just a few subjects, you have come forward in unprecedented numbers. This work is more important now than ever before.

Principal and Vice-Chancellor Suzanne Fortier created the Principal’s Prize for Public Engagement through Media to recognize outstanding achievement among those who share their knowledge with the public and the media. By doing so, you play a vital role in fulfilling the University’s commitment to being of service to society and engaging with the broader community.

We encourage all of you who engage in this essential work to apply for the Principal’s Prize for Public Engagement through Media.

Prizes will be given out in four categories:

  • Prize for Collaboration – for groups of undergraduate or graduate students who engage with the external community and/or the media;
  • Prize for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows – for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who are just starting to work with media and engage with the public;
  • Prize for Emerging Researchers – for those who are no more than 10 years beyond their PhD or other highest degree; and
  • Prize for Established Academics – for those who are 10+ years beyond their PhD or other highest degree.

The winners in each category will receive a cheque for $5,000.
