Empowering trainees with essential skills for professional growth through Toastmasters and Tremplin ambassadorship

On October 2, the Brain Repair and Integrative Neuroscience (BRaIN) Program at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) held its Toastmasters event, attracting strong participation from trainees. The event highlighted the program’s commitment to develop communication and leadership skills, aligning with the RI‑MUHC’s 2030 vision of fostering collaboration, mentorship and professional growth.

This initiative was made possible through the Tremplin Ambassadorship, awarded to BRaIN Program Manager Alexandra Kindrat, PhD, with generous sponsorship from Samuel David, PhD, BRaIN Program Scientist. Through these contributions, BRaIN Program trainees will engage in this initiative at no cost, offering them access to public speaking and leadership resources. Toastmaster sessions help individuals build confidence, improve their public speaking skills, and develop leadership abilities.

Amelie Bourdiec, PhD, a member of the Executive Operations Committee and Central Activities for the Tremplin Consortium, emphasized the importance of effective communication and leadership in professional growth. “When I was a PhD student, I often found myself needing that extra push and guidance to stay on the right path toward success. Gaining experience in effective communication is crucial, as it is a cornerstone for both graduate trainees and postdocs. We’re proud of this collaboration with the BRaIN Program in helping its members develop these critical skills.” Samuel David, also a generous financial sponsor of the event, echoed Bourdiec’s sentiments: “Supporting initiatives like this is vital for the growth and development of our future leaders. I am proud to contribute to a program that empowers individuals to enhance their communication and leadership skills.”

Alexandra Kindrat also expressed her gratitude for this opportunity: “This Tremplin ambassadorship is a wonderful opportunity for our members to continue developing their skills in a supportive environment. We are grateful for this partnership with the Tremplin Consortium and Samuel David.”

The event featured a series of engaging speeches and interactive sessions, providing attendees with the opportunity to practice public speaking in a supportive environment. Attendees shared personal stories and professional experiences, creating an inspiring atmosphere. The BRaIN Toastmasters club helps trainees build confidence and refine leadership skills – benefits that are invaluable in both academic and professional spheres.

New members are always welcome to join the BRaIN Toastmasters Club. The supportive community and structured learning environment make it an ideal place for individuals at all stages of their careers to develop their communication and leadership skills.
