The work of the Advisory Committee for the selection of a new Dean of Medicine and Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) is well advanced, and we anticipate a timely recommendation of a candidate to succeed Dr. Levin. Nonetheless, there will be a transition period between the end of Dr. Levin’s term of office and the arrival of a successor. While Dr. Levin completes his term on August 31st he will be on vacation for a period of time; hence we are delighted that Dr. Samuel Benaroya has agreed to serve as the Interim Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University with full portfolio responsibilities effective July 15th, 2011, and continuing until a new VP (HA) and Dean of Medicine assumes office.

Dr. Benaroya is McGill-educated and trained at the RVH, where he still practices. He is a highly respected academic administrator, teacher and clinician with many years of relevant experience having held numerous senior positions, including Associate Director of the Division of General Internal Medicine, Director of Medical Clinics and Associate Physician-in-Chief at the Royal Victoria Hospital, as well as Director of the McGill Residency Training Program for Internal Medicine. Dr. Benaroya has served in a number of leadership positions in our health community, including, most recently, as McGill’s Associate Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) and Associate Dean of the Faculty’s Inter-hospital Affairs.

On behalf of the University, we reiterate our gratitude to Dr. Levin – who has served the Faculty and University with vision, acumen and integrity since 2006 – for his exceptional tenure in a challenging position. We are confident that Dr. Benaroya will maintain this momentum and that his leadership will ensure a smooth transition for the next VP and Dean. Please join us in warmly welcoming Dr. Benaroya to his position as Interim Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) and Interim Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.
