We are pleased to formally announce the appointment of Dr. Robert Kearney to the position of Interim Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Medicine, McGill University. Dr. Kearney replaces Dr. Henrietta Galiana, who steps down after seven exceptionally successful years of leadership during which she inspired faculty, staff and students alike to strive for the best in research and education. Dr. Kearney, who served previously as Chair of the Department from 1989 to 2005 is the ideal candidate to take on the interim role. A three-time McGill graduate, he is Professor of Biomedical Engineering and an Associate Member of the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. He has been Graduate Program Director since 2010.
Dr. Kearney has built an impressive research record in the fields of human motor control, the clinical application of biomedical signals and system, and proteomics. He is the co-holder of one patent and three reports of invention, and is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). In 2000, he was the recipient of an IEEE Third Millennium Medal.
As Interim Chair of McGill’s Department of Biomedical Engineering, Dr. Kearney will be responsible for overseeing one of the largest graduate programs within the Faculty of Medicine, as well as nurturing continued collaborations with colleagues in the faculties of Engineering and Science. He will uphold the Department’s strong research platform and its alignment with clinical needs and serve as advisor to the Dean on all pertinent academic matters.
Please join us in warmly welcoming Dr. Kearney (back) to this position. His habitual strong leadership will be pivotal to the Department’s continued success.
