Appointment of Dr. Gerhard Multhaup

as Chair of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics

It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Gerhard Multhaup, PhD, to the position of Chair, Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine, McGill University, effective Oct. 16, 2011. Dr. Multhaup replaces Dr. Hans Heinrich Zingg, who has served in this role with great acumen since 2003, presiding over a period of growth and great success.

Dr. Multhaup is a renowned researcher in the field of neurodegenerative disorders. He received his PhD in Biology from the University of Cologne, Germany, in 1986, where he worked in the laboratory of Professor Konrad Beyreuther at the University’s Institute of Genetics. He was appointed full professor of Biochemistry at the Free University in Berlin in 2002 and became head of the Department of Biochemistry in the Faculty of Biology-Chemistry-Pharmacy in 2003. He served as Co-Director of the Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Free University in Berlin from 2004 to 2006.

Over the last 20 years, Dr. Multhaup has had an exemplary academic career. In addition to the extensive lectures, courses and seminars he has delivered, he has led several faculty recruitment committees for tenure-track positions and has supervised countless bachelor’s, master’s and PhD students.

Dr. Multhaup’s exceptional contributions to teaching and research have garnered many honorable distinctions. He has received the 2010 International Copper Association Award, the Alzheimer Forschung Initiative Award, the 2005 Copper Award, the 2007 Innovation Award of the Bioregions in Germany for Diagnosis and Therapy Research and several Tiburtius awards for his mentoring of PhD students.

His research aims to understand the molecular, cellular and systemic mechanisms of degenerative nervous system disorders, with the ultimate goal of preventing and treating these diseases as well as other acute and chronic neurological and psychiatric disorders. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles in prominent journals, such as Science, Nature, The EMBO Journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and the Journal of Neuroscience, and he has lectured and spoken at numerous conferences in Canada, the United States, Australia, Iceland and other European countries.

As Chair of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Dr. Multhaup will be responsible for the successful coordination of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate education for the Department. Dr. Multhaup’s vision includes building on the Department’s reputation nationally and internationally, as well as striving for comprehensive approaches in translational research and developing a central role for the Department in pharmacology-related research activities within McGill.
