As part of our Spring Convocation 2026 coverage, we asked graduates from our six Schools to share their experiences of completing a degree in McGill’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Here, we meet Class of 2026 member Ariane Songa-Côté from the School of Medicine. Ariane completed her MDCM and received her degree at the Spring Convocation Ceremony on May 26. Congratulations Ariane!

What did you love most about studying at McGill?
The people! I met inspiring mentors, teachers, physicians and amazing friends from diverse backgrounds who supported and inspired me along the way. I also loved how medicine at McGill constantly pushed me to grow and learn.
If you could change one thing in the world to make it better, what would you choose?
Oof! The list is long; it’s hard to choose one thing… But besides more love, empathy and humanity, I would say more equal access to quality education and healthcare, because these can really change the trajectory of someone’s life—not only for individuals, but for entire families and communities across generations.
Please share a particularly proud moment from your degree?
I’m proud of having maintained a balance between my studies and the things that fulfill me outside of medicine. Throughout my four years at McGill, I continued mentoring younger generation of students from underrepresented communities who are interested in the medical field, and it has been incredibly meaningful to see some of them grow and pursue their goals.
Your fave hangout spot?
Post-exam or post-lecture hangouts at Thompson House with friends for food, or “studying” sessions that somehow always turned into life updates.
Any shoutouts?
Shoutout to my family, my friends and every mentor who, especially during the more challenging moments, reminded me that I belonged in the spaces and opportunities I aspired to be in, and encouraged me to keep pushing myself beyond what I thought I was capable of.
Your top tip for incoming students in your program?
There is no rush to achieve your goals. Go at your own pace, trust your gut and do the things that fulfill you and align with your values. Keep doing the things you love outside of medicine, prioritize your well-being and embrace all the experiences and opportunities you will have along the way. You got this!
What’s next for you?
Starting residency in July in family medicine at McGill!
