Hailing from over 60 countries, members of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences’ newest cohort of residents and fellows gathered on June 27 for the annual Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Orientation.
The day opened with opening remarks from Lesley Fellows MDCM, DPhil, Vice-President (Health Affairs) and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Leon Tourian, MD, Associate Dean of PGME.
“You’re among 480 new trainees at McGill, and I am excited to ensure you get the best training possible,” said Dr. Tourian. “Montreal is a diverse and vibrant city, and that spirit of collaboration truly defines our institution.”
Attendees then participated in a series of interactive presentations and workshops designed to equip them for the start of their residency or fellowship, while offering an opportunity to engage with faculty, peers and support staff, as well as learn about the resources and culture that define the McGill experience.
For many, orientation provided essential context about the local medical system. Razan Al-Rabah, MD, who is originally from Saudi Arabia and is beginning her residency in general surgery, highlighted the value of the Pre-Entry Assessment Period (PEAP) assessment in preparing her for the realities of practising in Quebec. “The PEAP assessment gave me insight into the Quebec healthcare system. I’m grateful for the supportive environment and excited for the next five years,” she said.
