It is with great pleasure that we announce that the winner of the 2025 Louis & Artur Lucian Award for Research in Circulatory Diseases is Ziad Mallat, MD, PhD, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Cambridge.
Professor Mallat is among the world’s leading clinician scientists in atherosclerosis and aneurysms. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Jean-Paul Binet Prize from the Fondation pour la Recherche Médicale, the Jean Hamburger Prize from the City of Paris, and multiple honours from the French Academy of Sciences and the American Heart Association.
Professor Mallat is an expert in understanding the role of the innate and adaptive immune responses in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis and aortic aneurysm. His early work was groundbreaking as he identified an important atheroprotective role of regulatory T cells and associated anti-inflammatory cytokines, IL-10 and TGF-β. This work was further advanced when he identified selective pathogenic and protective roles for defined B cell and innate lymphoid cell subsets in atherosclerosis and cardiac remodeling following ischemic injury.
More recent work demonstrated that subpopulations of natural and/or inducible regulatory T (Treg) cells can inhibit atherosclerotic lesion development and inflammation. Through this work, he aims to develop novel immuno-modulatory and vaccination-based strategies to promote protective immune responses in cardiovascular disease.
