It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Apostolos Papageorgiou.
Dr. Papageorgiou was much more than Chief of Neonatology at the Jewish General Hospital. Trained in Montreal in pediatrics and neonatology, he was invited to lead the division at the Jewish General Hospital, where he devoted nearly half a century, including 47 years as Chief until 2021. He also served as Chief of the JGH Department of Pediatrics.
A visionary builder, he played a defining role in the evolution of neonatal care, both within the hospital and across Quebec. He helped transform the unit from a small service with only a few incubators into a recognized Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, supporting its growth through to its move to Pavilion K. Our unit, as it exists today, is largely the result of his vision, leadership, and perseverance.
An outstanding clinician and researcher, he made major contributions to neonatology. He helped save the lives of many of the most vulnerable newborns, including extremely low birth weight infants, leaving a lasting impact on countless families.
Internationally renowned, he visited more than 50 countries and delivered over 500 lectures, generously sharing his expertise and advancing neonatal care practices worldwide. His dedication to teaching also shaped generations of healthcare professionals, as reflected in the recognition he received from students and colleagues over the years.
Like many of you, I had the privilege of working alongside him and benefiting from his rigor, intellectual generosity, and deep humanity. He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy that will continue to guide our practice and inspire our commitment to newborns and their families.
